Since July 2023, this quiet historic beach has gained more popularity than ever since the release of the movie “Oppenheimer.” J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “Father of the Atomic Bomb” built himself, his wife and daughter a home right on the beach that still stands today. He had a deep connection to St. John that was influential in his life. In the 1950’s, he purchased the land from Robert and Nancy Gibney and built a small home for his family. The beach is known locally as both Gibney Beach and Oppenheimer Beach.
The property is now a part of the Virgin Islands National Park and enjoyed by the public. This location is iconic for weddings and celebrations because of its infamous history on St. John. There is nothing like being on this peaceful beach soaking up the history of J. Robert Oppenheimer’s dream home on St. John.
Access to the beach is either from the North Shore Road, with a road leading down from the gate, by boat, or you can surely snorkel over from its neighboring beach, Hawksnest. There is limited parking on the North Shore Road in front of the gate. Do not block the gate please!
