The Great Sieben Trail on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, is a historical route connecting the L’Esperance Road at Estate Sieben to Fish Bay and approximately .9 miles long taking about 30 minutes to hike. This hand-built colonial road has stood the test of time, with many of its stone retaining walls still in good condition. The trail descends through a shady, moist forest, offering a glimpse into the past and a unique nature experience. It winds through the Fish Bay Valley, passing by the remnants of the Sieben Ruins and the once standing Baobab Tree, although in 2022 it lost a fight with local pests and is no longer living. Very sad to see it reduced to dust after surviving centuries, hurricanes, etc. Exotic plants were brought from Asia to plant in a local garden and brought with it a weevil that killed the tree, thought to have been planted by Danish slaves hundreds of years ago after they smuggled seeds across the Atlantic Ocean.
On the Sieben Trail, you will be able to experience ruin sites, one with a graveyard. It is well known the Sieben plantation once covered more than 150 acres. The extensive ruins include the remains of the sugar factory, rum still, estate house and various other structures. In addition to sugar, Estate Sieben was one of the few estates to grow coffee. It may have even been the meeting spot for planning the insurrection of 1733, where slaves took control of the island for six months. Sieben Trail dumps out onto the South shore/Fish Bay roads and some amazing views of Fish, Rendezvous, Hart, and Chocolate Hole Bays.
One way to access the Sieben Trail is by way of the L’Esperance Trail, a perfect trail to soak in the views of the South Shore. L’Esperance Trail is considered one of the most challenging hikes on St. John and is a demanding round trip 3 to 4 hour hike. The trailhead is located on Centerline Road about a 1/4 mile on the right past the National Park Sign at Midway heading toward Coral Bay. The trail is very well maintained, and can be steep and rocky in many places. Many parts of the trail run along the ridge line and can be very narrow at times, so be careful.
There are several trails that intersect with the L’Esperance Trail such as the Reef Bay Trail (2.5 miles), Great Sieben Trail (1 mile), and Genti Bay Beach (2.6 miles). The L’Esperance Trail provides a combination of looking at historical ruins and seeing the environment change from bright green upper foliage to the desert cacti plants near the bottom of the trail near the beach.
Make sure to pace yourself along the way, wear closed-toe shoes, and bring plenty of water.
