Brown Bay beach on St. John is known for its secluded, relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, offering a more off-the-beaten path experience compared to other popular beaches on the island. It boasts a white sand beach with a narrow shoreline and a mix of sand and sea grass in the water. The beach is accessible via a hiking trail, which adds to its appeal for those seeking a more adventurous beach experience. Right before you reach the beach, you will see a haven of Hermit Crabs, sometimes hundreds.  Reef2Peak offers a wonderful Brown Bay Guided Hike and Snorkel.

There is no vehicle access to the beach.  The primary way to reach Brown Bay is by hiking approximately .8 miles on the Brown Bay Trail, located off East End Road about 1 mile past Coral Bay on Rt. 10 with an entrance on the left side of the road with a sign and ample parking.  The hike is moderately challenging, involving a climb to a ridge before descending to the beach. The bottom of the bay is a mix of sand and sea grass, with shallow entry.  Brown Bay can be wind-swept, especially when the wind is out of the north. The shoreline offers shade and areas to hang towels.

Brown Bay provides good snorkeling opportunities, especially further from the beach, where the water is deeper.  The beach is a sea turtle nesting area.  At the western end of the beach, there are ruins of a former plantation. Be aware of Jack Spaniard Wasps, which may be found on the vines in the area.
